The communicative approach
The learning process should focus on authentic communication: the ultimate goal for any student. This approach to language allows learners to obtain all the necessary language skills needed to successfully function in English.
Theme Based Learning
A theme-based language learning course provides students with ample exposure to repeated topics, phrases, vocabulary, and naturally occurring grammatical structures. This is the way in which we learn our first language, and it is also an effective way for English language students to acquire new vocabulary and structures. Offering text, listening passages, and/or videos on similar topics, this approach enables students to guess unfamiliar vocabulary and structures from context, one of the important skills learners acquire while working on all of the courses.
Task Based Learning
Students learn best by doing. Incorporating meaningful assignments that learners must complete throughout the course allows them to succeed at the task at hand, while they naturally develop their language skills at the same time.
Skills Based Design
All language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), vocabulary, and grammar are practiced simultaneously. This is important for skillful, authentic communication and comprehension.
Student centered and Independent Learning
Courses incorporate democratic environments and built-in, level-appropriate pedagogical tools to best foster independent learning. It also ensures all courses (even those that are teacher-led) are student-centered.
Multi Media Technology
Both the activities and interfaces of the courses use slide shows, videos, recordings and animations. This technology not only enhances each learning level, but also provides optimal ease of use.
Scaffolding
Level-appropriate pedagogical tools are available to the learner at any time. These tools support the learning process by providing students with definitions, explanations, translations, examples, and learning strategies, for all language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), vocabulary development, and grammar.
Authenticity
Courses offer students maximum exposure to authentic language. As learners navigate through the courses, they read texts, listen to recordings, and watch videos that provide practice in all language skills. Grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are all presented in meaningful contexts.
Feedback and Assessment
Feedback is an essential component of English language learning and is both motivating and reinforcing. All interactive practice activities have automatic feedback. Special tools and lessons in some courses – such as the Studio, Speak2Me and the Guided Writing Lessons – offer graphic feedback for speaking, and rubrics for assessing writing objectives. Furthermore, achievement tests provide learners with a way to check their overall progress. Students can check their ongoing progress at any time.
